The 2023 BMW M2 (G87) is a performance sports coupe developed by BMW's M division and is based on the second-generation (G42) 2 Series coupe.
Revealed in October 2022 at the Motorclassica event in Melbourne, Australia and went on sale in April 2023, following on from the first-generation 2016 M2.
Produced at BMW Mexico's Plant in San Luis Potos, Mexico, the performance model is produced alongside the 2 Series using the same modular CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform. The platform allows for multiple variations in its design, specifications, and drivetrain, as well as materials including aluminium, steel, and carbon fibre.
It is fitted with the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 engine utilised by the M3 (G80) although it has a 3D-printed cylinder head and a lightweight forged crankshaft. It produces 453 bhp (338 kW) and 406 ft·lb (550 N·m) of torque to the rear wheels through the option of a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox.
Alongside the powerful engine, an active differential works with a DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system integrated into the ECU allow for faster control of each individual wheel, and six-piston caliper brakes fitted to the front wheels - as well as single-piston caliper brakes for the rear wheels - are used with the M Traction Control for 10 stages of allowed wheel slip.
Offered as the smallest M developed car offered by BMW, its wheelbase is 110mm shorter than the M4 (G82), but its performance bodywork makes it just as wide, as the design features larger wheel arches and only shares three components with the 2 Series: the bonnet, bootlid, and doors.
