The 2019 BMW M2 Competition (F87) is a high-performance package developed, manufactured, and offered by BMW for the M2 (F87).
First shown at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show, the M2 Competition was built to compete against both the Audi RS3 and the BMW M4 (F82), to assert itself as a powerful small coupé that could compete above its fighting weight. It replaced the initial M2 when it went on sale in 2019.
Over the established M2, the Competition is fitted with the more powerful S55 engine developed by the M Motorsport division. Based on the N55 engine, it is twin-turbocharged, has a revised cooling system with more robust intercoolers from the larger M cars, a lighter crankshaft, and stronger pistons.
Alongside the engine, it is offered with the choice of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) automatic gearbox, either of which is fed into a variable limited-slip differential and managed by a revised ESP (Electronic Stability Program) to improve cornering throttle control.
For improved chassis rigidity, the engine bay has a carbon fibre strut brace and an additional bulkhead strut, with the rear suspension utilising ball joints for improved steering precision.
