Free Ride (also known as Free Roam, Free Run in the Underground series, and Test Drive in older releases) is a game mode that is featured in Need for Speed: High Stakes, Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, Motor City Online, the Underground series, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Need for Speed: Carbon, Need for Speed Carbon: Own The City, Need for Speed: Undercover, Need for Speed: World, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010), Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012), Need for Speed: Rivals, Need for Speed (2015), and Need for Speed: Payback.
Free Ride allows the player to freely roam around the game's setting. All titles that do not have an open world location allow the player to drive on a track without any lap limitations and opponents instead.

- In Underground 2, race and shop locations from the career mode are not highlighted in this mode.
- In Need for Speed: Underground, drag and drift are unavailable in this mode. In Underground 2, only Outrun races are available, with no bank rewards.
- Both cops and racers have access to Free Ride mode in Hot Pursuit (2010).
