Lexus is a luxury division of the Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota founded in 1989.

The LS400, the first car released under the Lexus marque, was widely praised for it's blend of luxury and reliability, and was touted as a cheaper yet more credible competitor to the German large luxury sedans like the Mercedes Benz S Class. However, it was criticized for having no soul, which the German competitors have.

Early Lexus models were often portrayed as cheap Mercedes-Benz copies.

Later on the company has established worldwide a reputation of building advanced, reliable luxury cars, albeit with uninspiring performance. Lexus is hoping for a more sportier image with the IS-F, GS-F, and LFA.
