The 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 (R230) is a luxurious convertible from Mercedes-Benz that entered produced in 2001.

The R230 models of the SL line were retired in 2011 with the unveiling of the R231 generation that entered production in 2012. The R231 SL line has seen two design alterations in 2006 and 2008.

The 2006 alterations included different engines for the SL 500 as well exterior changes such as new bumpers, larger cooling intakes, a new rear light, new fog lamps, new allow wheels, and a more pronounced V-shape.

The 2008 facelift integrated cues from the company's new design philosophy including a more aggressive front fascia and a single bar grille.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

The SL 500 appears in Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

It lacks in handling, compared to its rivals, although it compensates with better acceleration and a higher top speed. It can reach a top speed of up to 242 mph (389 km/h), once it is equipped with Ultimate performance parts.

It is best suited to pursuits and race courses consisting of mostly straight sections. It is among the heaviest vehicles available, and as such, is well suited for use in pursuits, as its weight makes it easier to plough through Roadblocks and deal damage to cop cars.

Stock

The stock SL 500 is unlocked through the Career mode upon the player defeating Blacklist Rival #11: Lou "Big Lou" Park.

Upon being unlocked, it can be purchased in the Career mode from a Car Lot for 75,000 cash, and it can be selected for customisation in My Cars.

Tuned

• In Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the SL 500's Challenge Series pre-set has the same visual appearance in both of its events, but has differing performance ratings.
• In the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii releases of Need for Speed: Undercover, the SL 500 shares similar body kits from Need for Speed: Carbon for the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG (R230).
