}}CleanupThe Mercury Cougar XR-7 is the first generation of the Cougar from Mercury and was released in 1967. Sharing many features as its counterpart, the Ford Mustang, it had minor changes in 1968 and had a facelift in 1969. Out of all the years of the Cougar (1967-1997,1999-2002) the 1967-68 era Cougar is arguably the most popular version of the Cougar.

As a contestant in the "pony car" era, the Cougar was the performance icon for Mercury for decades and was mainly sold in two model types, the base model and the more sporty XR-7 variety. Both varieties were only sold as a two-door hardtop without a center or B-pillar. The Cougar was almost identical to its brethren, the Mustang, except it had a 3 inch longer wheelbase and a divided grille with covered headlamps (a feature in the earlier models.) It could also be upgraded with a GT package with Ford's own 6.4L big block, producing 335 hp.

The Mercury Cougar XR-7 GT-E 427 is a first generation pony car manufactured by Mercury in 1968 following revisions from its first year on the market in 1967, but before the trim was dropped for the final two years of production in 1969 and 1970.

Based on the mid-generation refresh Ford Mustang Fastback, the Cougar had a 2 inch longer wheelbase as well as hidden grille headlights. Its design was based on the Jaguar E-Type to help create a European appeal to the North American consumer.

The XR-7 is an luxurious trim level that included leather bucket seats, woodgrain dashboard inserts, a roof-mounted console, and a vinyl roof cover.

Both the regular and XR-7 trim levels included an optional GT-E package which included further components, but the biggest improvement was either a 427 V8, that was fitted to 357 units, or a 428 Cobra Jet V8, of which was fitted to 37 units.
