The 1997 Mitsubibishi Eclipse GS (Grand Sport) Spyder is a 2-door 2+2 convertible sold as a Mitsubishi from mid-1996 to mid-1997.
Built as a partnership between Mitsubishi and Chrysler as Diamond-Star Motors, the second generation of the Eclipse began production in 1994 and was manufactured in Normal, Illinois until 1999, at which point it was replaced by the third generation Eclipse and then the subsequent fourth generation Eclipse in 2005.
Alongside its production run as the Mitsubishi badged Eclipse, it was also sold as the Eagle Talon until 1998.
The GS Spyder is the lower of two trims offered; GS and GS-T. Both are fitted with items offered with the Rally Sport (RS) trim with additional items including an electric folding fabric roof, a cassette player, powered antenna, 16" wheels, fog lights, and body-coloured exterior components.
A 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated inline-4 from Chrysler (4G64) is fitted with the GS trim, whereas a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4 by Mitsubishi (4G63T) is fitted with the higher GS-T trim. Both of the trim levels had a front-wheel drive configuration.
For the 1997 model year and going forward, the front bumper was redesigned to give a more aggressive look for the front grille, the headlights were altered, and the rear bumper was changed with a revised placement for the reverse lights.
Although the Spyder only being offered with either the GS or GS-T trim levels, the coupé was offered with the option of an RS, GS, GS-T, or GSX trim.
