An EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) is an Equipment device for cops and racers in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered.

Offered to cops and racers, the EMP device is capable of temporarily disrupting and damaging a target following a successful lock-on. After an attempt at a lock-on - regardless of it being successful or not - the device will need to recharge before another lock-on can be attempted.

The EMP device must lock onto a target in order to fire an electrical pulse, which will damage the target. The EMP device will take time to recharge after each use but the player will be notified when it is available.

Players can evade an EMP lock-on through various means:

  • Forcing the targeting vehicle to overtake its target
  • Forcing the targeting vehicle to crash
  • Successfully hitting the targeting vehicle with a spike strip
  • Activating a Jammer
  • Increasing distance between the target and targeting vehicle beyond the device's lock-on range
