Underground Rivals is an asynchronous players versus player game mode in Need for Speed: No Limits and was introduced with the "Underground Rivals" update (3.0.1) released on September 11, 2018 to replace the Blackridge Rivals game mode.

Players race against each other in time trial point-to-point sprints along courses related the current weekly event, with the participating player racing against a ghost of an opponent player's previously set time for a course.

Gameplay

Race Tags

Beating an opponent player's time rewards the player with a Race Tag, which can be accumulated by beating other opponents and increases the player's Tier. Being at a higher Tier when a weekly event ends will reward the player with a greater number of prizes based on the performance divisions they entered for the event. Players can lose a Race Tag by failing to beat an opponent player's time, but they can not drop below having zero Race Tags.

Each Race Tag earned is associated with the Division in which they were won by the player.

Divisions

Each weekly event has three performance divisions; Driver, Speedster, and Breakneck. Each division has an outlined selection of eligible cars, as well as their own matchmaking and prizes. Players can participate in all three divisions of an Underground Rivals event providing they own an eligible car for entry.

Restrictions

Each Division has a selection of eligible cars players can use to participate in the weekly event. The selection allowed for each Division allowed the player use their own cars for the weekly event but each Division has a set performance rating (PR) cap.

Tiers

There are eight Tiers players can progress through during each weekly event. Reaching higher Tiers reward prizes upon the player levelling up to a new Tier, and exclusive rewards are given to the player if they manage to reach the Rivals Tier by reaching S Tier in all three Divisions of a weekly event.

Players have to earn and hold a certain number of Race Tags within each Tier before they are able to progress to the next Tier.

Division Unranked E Tier D Tier C Tier B Tier A Tier S Tier
Driver 0 Tags 2 Tags 2 Tags 3 Tags 4 Tags 5 Tags 6 Tags
Speedster 0 Tags 2 Tags 3 Tags 4 Tags 5 Tags 6 Tags 7 Tags
Breakneck 0 Tags 3 Tags 4 Tags 5 Tags 6 Tags 7 Tags 8 Tags

Points

Once a player has reached Rival Tier within a weekly event, they can earn or lose points towards their Division Rating.

Points are earned or lost based on the player winning or losing to an opponent that is either performing better or worse than them. Losing to a better performing player loses less points than losing to a worse performing player, and beating a better performing player earns more points than losing to a worse performing player.

The player's points are shown in the Event Leaderboard and are tied to the current weekly event. When a new weekly event begins, the player's score for the previously weekly event is added to their Underground Score. Every twelve weeks, when an event returns in the event loop, the player is able to improve their previous score.

The player with the highest Underground Score on the leaderboard is dubbed the "King of the Underground".

Weekly Events

Each weekly event has a unique name and theme to denote the location or courses players will compete against each other along. There are twelve weekly events that follow on from each other each week until the end of the fourteenth event, at which point the event loop begins again.

Events

There are fourteen different weekly events, which each is made available for a single week duration and then rotates to the next weekly event. After the fourteenth weekly event ends, the loop begins again, and the first weekly event starts.

With each rotation of a weekly event and each update released, the selection of eligible cars and Tier rewards changes between each weekly event, as well as differing from the prizes and restrictions in place for the previous time a weekly event was featured.
