Cars in Need for Speed: The Run are divided into four classes across six performance tiers and five handling traits.
The selection of available cars offered to the player differs depending on the stage of The Run, the Challenge Series event, or multiplayer Playlist they are participating in. New cars can be unlocked by progressing through any of the game modes and through the purchase of downloadable content packs.
Players with registered copies of either Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010), Need for Speed: World, or Shift 2: Unleashed can be verified as a Need for Speed VIP and unlock a BMW Z4 GT3 "Team Need for Speed".
Performance[]
The overall performance of each car is based on its associated tier rating, class, drivetrain, and handling rating.
Tiers[]
A tier rating relates to the brake horsepower output (bhp) and top speed of a car, with one being the lowest and six being the highest:
- Tier 1 - Up to 150 mph (241 km/h)
- Tier 2 - Up to 165 mph (266 km/h)
- Tier 3 - Up to 185 mph (298 km/h)
- Tier 4 - Up to 201 mph (323 km/h)
- Tier 5 - Up to 225 mph (362 km/h)
- Tier 6 - Up to 258 mph (415 km/h)
Class[]
A class relates to the car's suitable technicality and surface:
- Muscle - Highspeed routes with subtle turns
- Exotic - Tight routes with multiple technical turns
- Sports - Urban locations and sharp turns
Drivetrain[]
The drivetrain indicates which wheels receive power from a car's engine:
- FWD - Front-wheel drive
- RWD - Rear-wheel drive
- AWD - All-wheel drive
Handling[]
The handling rating denotes the steering dynamics and complexity of the car through cornering:
- Easy
- Normal
- Challenging
- Very Difficult
- Expert
Editions[]
Some cars also feature special Need for Speed editions or signature editions:
- Need for Speed - Uniquely upgraded with performance parts and bodywork, with a special Need for Speed branded livery
- Signature - Upgraded one-off special cars either based off particular brands, designs, or replications of real project cars
