Multiplayer in Need for Speed: The Run is made up of various Playlists containing Sessions, in which up to eight players can compete against each other with points-based scoring to determine the winner.
Players can choose from a selection of Playlists to participate in or join a Quick Match:
- Playlists have a different selection of Sessions, Solo Objectives, and car restrictions.
- Quick Match will join any currently active Session of any unlocked Playlist.
Selecting a Playlist will show the player the list of Solo Objectives available in that Playlist, as well as those completed and those they player can currently contribute towards completing. Players can unlocked other Playlists by completing Multiplayer Objectives.
Players can also choose to invite or join friends and create a Group of up to four players. Within a Group, players can complete Group Objectives to earn extra experience points and unique car unlocks.
Once the player has selected their desired Playlist, they will be placed into an available Session within that Playlist. This may be as a new Session that is just about to start or during a Session currently in progress.
Each Session has a name and can consist of one to five events, of which each event takes place along a specific track. Once all events of a Session have been completed, the Session will come to a close and the participant with the highest amount of points is chosen as the winner. Players can tie for a finishing position if they have the same amount of points as another player at the end of a Session.
At the end of a Session, participants can vote on one of two Sessions within the same Playlist they wish to participate in next. Upon the completion of the vote, the Bonus Wheel will be spun and offer a prize for competing the upcoming Session.
Playlist[]
There are seven Playlists in multiplayer, with each offering a different selection of rules and Sessions.
Four Playlists are offered to players from the beginning, with an additional three unlocked by completing Multiplayer Objectives.
Session[]
A Session in a Playlist has a unique name representing a theme, criteria, or grouping of listed tracks alongside a technical rating for each representing the level of driving skill required to perform well along that track.
As players compete against each other, they'll earn points for a Session based on their finishing position.
Tracks for a Session are ran in the order they appear in the Session's list from top to bottom. Once all tracks of a Session have been completed, the player with the highest cumulative points is the winner.
Points[]
Players earn points based on their finishing position for each track in a Session. More points are earned for a higher finishing position and the points players earn from tracks in a Session are added together once all tracks have been completed.
The player with the highest total amount of points at the end of the Session is the winner.
- 1st - 20 points
- 2nd - 18 points
- 3rd - 16 points
- 4th - 14 points
- 5th - 13 points
- 6th - 12 points
- 7th - 11 points
- 8th - 10 points
Multiplayer Objectives[]
Multiplayer Objectives are a selection of goals with experience point rewards for their completion, and rewards for completing multiple objectives in a Playlist.
There are two types of Multiplayer Objectives:
- Solo Objectives - A player's own target offered per Playlist
- Group Objectives - A Playgroup of players' cumulative target offered across any Playlist
The selection of objectives offered depends on the player's current progression in a Playlist. Not all objectives are offered at once and are offered to the player for completion as other objectives are completed.
Bonus Wheel[]
The Bonus Wheel is a random prize that can be won based on the results at the end of a Session.
Rewards offered include bonus experience points, profile icons, profile banners, cars, and an achievement/trophy.
Awards[]
At the end of each event, players are awarded experience points based on their driving along each track.
Additionally, they can earn extra experience points from multiplayer awards given to players based on their driving compared to all the others players' driving along the previous track.
Each player is awarded two or three multiplayer awards per each track they race along in a Session.
