A gearbox is a series of shafts with differing gear ratios housed inside of casing designed to maintain the optimal powerband for an engine to function as power and torque is transferred to the wheels.

The number of gears alters the number of gear ratios across the final drive to optimise power delivery across an increased number of shorter gears or a decreased number of longer gears.
