COPS VS RACERS
Hunt as a cop and try to survivie as a racer over two rounds.
— In-game description

Hot Pursuit is an event type in Need for Speed: Unbound and was introduced as part of Volume 8.

It is a checkpointed sprint event across two rounds with up to eight players split into two teams - each team includes up to four of the eight players - and taking in turns participating in either round as a racer or a cop.

Events can be found within Lakeshore Online at meetup locations in Free Roam or through matchmaking in PvP.

Event[]

Rounds[]

A Hot Pursuit event has two rounds with each team of players taking a turn as either a cop or a racer.

  • As a cop, players have to bust all the racers by disabling their vehicles before they reach the finish line.
  • As a racer, players compete against each other to survive and cross the finish line.

At the end of the first round, the teams swap factions for the second round, and the event ends after the conclusion of the second round.

Cop[]

Catch the Racers

As a cop, players are granted access to pursuit vehicles, Pursuit Tech, and reinforcements from the Lakeshore Police Department for engaging with racers.

Pursuit vehicles can redeploy, be equipped with Pursuit Tech, do not have to follow the event route or pass through checkpoints, and have unlimited nitrous.

Cops work best working with fellow team members through deployment of Pursuit Tech against racers, engaging with racers through aggressive tactics, and co-ordinating with LPD roadblocks.

Cop Career[]

Bust racers to increase your score. Rank up as a cop to earn new vehicles and Pursuit Tech.

The availability of pursuit vehicles and Pursuit Tech is tied to a player's rank in their Cop Career, with the selection offered increasing as they complete challenges and reach higher ranks.

New players at Rank 00 are given access to a Ford Crown Victoria (2008) - provided by the Seacrest County Police Department - although they are not allotted any Pursuit Tech until they reach Rank 01.

Redeploy[]

Press button to redeploy in front of racers

Cops can redeploy by pressing a button or key highlighted on the left side of their HUD (Enter or D-pad Up), which will place them ahead of the racer in first place.

Redeployment is not made available immediately at the start of a pursuit but can be activated once its cooldown has ended. Each time a player redeploys, they can not redeploy again until its cooldown has ended.

Although cop vehicles have health, they are immune to Pursuit Tech deployed by fellow members of the cop team - except LPD units - and will respawn if their health is depleted.

Pursuit Tech[]

Press button to use Pursuit Tech (if equipped)

Pursuit Tech can be utilised by players on the cop team during pursuits by pressing a button or key highlighted on the right side of their HUD (E key or Circle/B). Each tech option has a specific effect on a racer's vehicle and has a cooldown relative to their tech type.

Players can equip, swap, or upgrade Pursuit Tech for each of their owned pursuit vehicles in the "Cop Garage" section of the player's garage in Lakeshore Online.

Equipped tech is not made available immediately at the start of a pursuit but can be reactivated once its cooldown has ended. Each time a player activates their equipped tech option, they can not activate it again until its cooldown has ended, but no tech option has limited usage.

Racers are not made aware of the Pursuit Tech equipped to a pursuit vehicle, but are shown when Pursuit Tech is deployed with a notification of the Pursuit Tech deployed and the player deploying it.

Successful usage of Pursuit Tech will damage a racer's vehicle and reward the player that deployed the tech with bars of burst nitrous depending on their effectiveness.

Racer[]

Survive

As a racer, players have access to their selection of owned vehicles from their garage, as well as the option of a rental, but their options will be limited to the event's performance tier.

Racers have limited health, will respawn as a member of the cop team if they're busted, must follow the event's route, and can use nitrous as well as any equipped auxiliary performance parts.

Racers compete against other racers to score points by surviving the round and reaching the finish line, however, they can fight amongst each other to soften rivals for the cop team or the LPD to bust them as well as exact revenge if they're busted as they'll respawn as an additional member of the cop team.

Health[]

Use gas stations to repair

Each racer has a limited amount of health for a round and taking damage from cops, Pursuit Tech, rivals racers, or through negligence will reduce the amount of health a player has.

Cops are shown the current health a racer has as a coloured bar above a that racer's vehicle.

If a racer is hit by a cop team member's pursuit tech, they will suffer an effective hindrance to their overall health as well as a temporary adverse effect to their vehicle's performance:

  • EMP - If a lock-on is achieved, a shockwave will disable the engine and reduce steering for a short period of time. A hit vehicle will also gradually slow down and will eventually stop unless its engine can be restarted.
  • ESF - A cop with an active ESF is shown with an overshield. Whilst the overshield is active, the cop will be able to inflict more damage and also be more resilient to damage.
  • Spike Strip - Will pop any tyres that roll over any deployed strips. A tyre will reinflate twelve seconds after bursting.

Players can replenish their health by driving through any Gas Station along an event's route or by equipping an auxiliary repair kit.

If a racer's health reaches zero or they crash out whilst at "Critical Damage", they will be have been busted by the cop team and respawn as a member of the cop team.

Racing[]

Win the race for maximum points

For racers, a round of an event begins at the start line with all members of the racer team arranged in a starting grid, allowing players to perform a perfect start.

As racers progress along the event's route, they will pass the cop team not far from the start line and will be allowed to engage in pursuit shortly after the round has begun, giving the racer team a short window of time to get ahead of the cop team before they can catch up.

Members of the racer team are shown their current distance along a route as a completion percentage and cops are shown the current completion percentage of the racer in first place.

Throughout the event, LPD units will support members of the cop team alongside deploying roadblocks along the event route outside of any influence by the cop team.

Racers that cross the finish line will have "survived" the round and earn points towards their total score for the event depending on their finishing position. If a racer crosses the finish line, any remaining racers will have forty seconds to reach the finish line or hey will be busted.

Busted[]

If you're busted, you'll join the cops

A racer can be busted if they run out of health or if a cop is able to keep them stationary for four seconds.

Racers have a limited amount of health for a round, they will lose health through taking damage, and can replenish their health by driving through Gas Stations or using an auxiliary repair kit, but will be busted if at any point during the round their health is depleted.

If a cop is within close range of a stationary or slow moving racer, a "busting" meter will appear for the cop performing the bust and the racer being busted. Whilst the meter is active, a racer is blocked from using their respawn option, but evade the bust if they gain enough momentum. If the racer is not able to evade before the meter has filled, they will be busted.

Busted racers will respawn as a member of the cop team and be unable to cross the finish line. They can, however, earn points by busting any remaining members of the racer team.

Scoring[]

Points are earned as players participate during both rounds of an event, as players can earn points as members of either team, and the total points earned by each player are shown after each round has concluded.

In a round as a cop, busting a racer will add a single point to the player's score. During a racer round, players busted as a racer can also earn an additional point towards their score by busting their fellow racers following becoming a cop.

In a round as a racer, points are earned based on a player their finishing position after they reach the finish line and survive.
