Outruns are races between two cars in free mode. Need for Speed: Underground 2 was the only NFS game to feature outruns, although Need for Speed: Undercover has a strikingly similar race mode known as Highway Battle. Outruns are also available as a race when playing split-screen.

Overview

Only two racers are competing in an outrun. The player has to overtake his opponent and outrun him by more than 1000ft (300m). Both racers can drive wherever they want, because there's no determined route. If the player was overtaken by his opponent, an arrow will be displayed after the distance between both is more than 55m (180ft).

Usually players get rewarded with 100 credits after a successful outrun. After completing a certain amount of outruns, the player will obtain a free unique part.

Tips

  • One way many Underground gamers use to win outruns fast is by driving to a dead end. Here you must wait for your opponent. Just right before you encounter him, drive away. This will give you enough time to outrun your opponent by more than 300m.
  • It is also possible to outrun your opponent right after starting an outrun race. Before starting the race make sure that your vehicle is drafting in your opponents car. Then when your rival is turning, start a race and drive away as fast as possible. This trick is considered as the easiest way to win outruns.
  • A similar trick like mentioned above would be by hitting your opponent's car hard on a freeway. Right after that launch the race. Use nitrous to hit your opponent harder. Another easy way also would be by urging your rival into traffic.
  • In the Underground 2 map there's a shortcut under a highway, in which the player can reset their car. The car will not be spawned in the shortcut but in the highway. A lot of NFS player use this method, because the AI won't notice that you are on the highway. Instead they just drive anywhere else.
