The Player is an unnamed protagonist players take the role of through the events of Underground Mode in Need for Speed: Underground and the career mode in Need for Speed: Underground 2.

Need for Speed: Underground

The player arrives as a newbie in the street racing scene of Olympic City, but quickly starts to make a name for themselves with the help of Samantha and TJ. Soon, they challenge the best racers in the city on the leader board rankings.

Eventually, the player takes on Eddie's crew, The Eastsiders, and defeats them. The final race sees the player being put against Melissa.

Acura Integra Type-R

During the prologue race, the player drives a custom Acura Integra Type R entitled "Vortex". It is unlocked for Quick Race mode after collecting 46,000 style points.

Need for Speed: Underground 2

Prior to the events of Need for Speed: Underground 2, the player defeated the best racers in Olympic City, the Eastriders, and was offered a spot in the crew of an unknown contact. The player refused the offer, and was later rammed off the road by an unknown driver, resulting in the player's car being totalled.

Six months after the incident, the player arrives in Bayview City. Samantha's friend, Rachel Teller, as well as Tommy help the player get to the racing scene in a similar bid to what Samantha did.

After successfully completing a series of sponsor contracts, the player becomes noticed by The Wraiths, led by Caleb Reece, who is revealed to be responsible for the player's crash in Olympic City. Rachel warns the player about their deals of manipulating their sponsorships in order to claim Bayview's racing scene for themselves.

The player proceeds to challenge The Wraiths and defeats them, including Nikki Morris, who decided to join the player. Due to his crew's poor performance, Caleb loses his sponsors and challenges the player to a race, which he also loses in the end.

Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec (R34)

During the opening sequence of Need for Speed: Underground 2's prologue, the player is seen driving a Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec (R34) that can not be unlocked.

Trivia

• The player is never shown in Need for Speed: Underground, but is briefly shown in silhouette during some cutscenes in Need for Speed: Underground 2.
• During the opening sequence of a prologue race in the career mode of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Rog comments on the player's appearance in the Rockport street racing scene as a reference to the previous Underground series games taking place entirely at night time and the proceeding Most Wanted game taking place entirely during daytime.
