The 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera (993) is the base model of the Porsche 911 series' fourth generation, replacing the previous generation 964 for model year 1994.
It was made available in Coupé and Cabriolet body styles with rear-wheel drive, and powered by a new air-cooled 3.6-litre F6 engine.
It evolved over the previous 964 generation with improved construction of the body to an all-alloy subframe, gained wider and flatter front wings, shorter luggage compartment lid omitting the front bumper, widened rear wings running in a straighter line towards the rear with higher-positioned tail lights, and is the 911 fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission.[1]
It was produced until 1995, with a 911 Carrera (993) revision for model year 1996, receiving an updated engine developing 285 hp, as well as a Targa variant.
The 993 was the last generation of the 911 series to feature air-cooled engines, being succeeded by the 996 in 1998.
Games[]
The Need for Speed[]
The 911 Carrera (993) appears in The Need for Speed.
In all releases, following the 3DO original release, it is grouped in Class B alongside the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 and Dodge Viper RT/10. It has noticeably better handling than the other cars in its class.
It can only be selected with a dark bluish-green paint although, in the PlayStation and Sega Saturn releases, it can appear in light blue when driven by A.I. and split-screen opponents.
Description
The new 911 still sports the much loved design. Liftoff oversteer tendencies have been greatly softened by chassis tuning and wide rear tires. In tight, really low speed corners the front end will push, but with throttle application the car is easy to balance as speed increases. Racing-bred ABS brakes have excellent feel and are fantastically powerful.
Few designs have been as long-lived as the Porsche 911, or is successfully updated. Its instantly recognizable silhouette has been around for more than 30 years, but with each revision, this rear-engined, air-cooled flat 6-powered sports car from Zuffenhausen has been made to corner more aggressively, accelerate harder, stop shorter, and through detail refinement, look better. To many of its followers, the 911 is considered to be the only real Porsche.
With 59% of its 3065 pounds borne by the rear wheels, the 911's tail can still be made to step out by lifting off the throttle or braking under considerable side loading; however, this tendency is much more benign with its improved rear suspension. Where this rear weight bias helps out tremendously is in the 911's fantastically powerful braking, affected through huge vented and cross-drilled rotors clamped by racing bred ABS-assisted calipers. Overall, this car has a great feeling of precision and finesse.
The 911's air-cooled flat-six engine has always been its most intriguing feature, with its belt-driven cooling fan and a crankcase to which bolts six individual cylinders and heads. To make the best use of its 270 horsepower, the engine is mated to a 6-speed transaxle, a Porsche production first. Also of note is the new aluminum multi-link rear suspension that replaces the less forgiving semi-trailing arms that the car has had since its inception.

It is featured in coupé and cabriolet variants.
