The 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera (996) replaced the 993.
It was made available with a series of water-cooled flat-six engines from Porsche instead of the air-cooled engines of previous 911 generations.
Also notable for the 996, was its new body shell, which was no longer based on Ferdinand Porsche's original design. It was also significantly increased in size to improve driving comfort.
The Carrera RS model was dropped for this generation.
