The 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach Package (Rennsport) (991) is a track-focused, high-performance option for the 991 generation 911, and successor to the 997 generation GT2 RS, developed and manufactured by Porsche with a 1,000 unit limited production run.
It was publicly showcased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 30, 2017, after being briefly shown during Microsoft's "Xbox E3 2017 Briefing" presentation as part of the announcement of Forza Motorsport 7 on June 11, 2017, as the highest performing option offered for the 991 and facelifted 991.2 generation.
Fitted with the same 3.8-litre flat-6 engine found throughout the 991 and 991.2 generation, it produces 553 ft·lb (750 N·m) - the same amount as the later 991.2 Turbo S' swan song - but also produces 691 bhp (515 kW): at least 132 bhp (98 kW) more than the 991 Turbo S and 92 bhp (69 kW) more than the 991.2 Turbo S Exclusive.
As well as utilising the most powerful engine of its generation, the bodywork has an aerodynamic package to improve airflow to the brakes, allow for greater ventilation of pressure around the wheels, and generate a vacuum beneath to reduce overall lift at speed.
The materials used for components attached to the aluminium-steel composite 911 Turbo chassis differ to reduce weight, as the bonnet, boot lid, and all four fenders are made of CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers). The aprons under those wings are made from a mixture of carbon-fibre and polyurethane, the front and rear windows are made of polycarbonate, the roof is made of carbon-fibre with a magnesium finish, and the spoiler is made of carbon-fibre with forged aluminium supports.
Power is sent solely to the rear wheels, the improved engine performance and lightweight constriction are teamed with a 7-speed automatic PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) transmission to improve acceleration, as the not utilising the all-wheel drive system used in other 991 and 991.2 models allows for greater rotation through corners whilst also reducing weight.
On September 20, 2017, Lars Kern, a test driver for Porsche, set the fastest lap time of 6:47.25 around the Nurburgring Nordschleife for a production car using a 911 GT2 RS fitted with the Weissach Package. It stood for nearly a year until it was beaten by Marco Mapelli in the Lamborghini Aventador LP 770-4 SVJ on July 26, 2018, whom set a lap time nearly 2.5 seconds quicker, but was retaken by Lars Kern on June 14, 2021 with a 6 second quicker lap using a 911 GT2 RS MR modified by Manthey Racing, although Marco Mapelli's record had been beaten by Maro Engel in a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series over 7 months prior.
Initially, only 1,000 units were intended to be produced, including the track-only GT2 RS Clubsport. Production ended in February 2019, but 4 units were lost when the Grande America cargo ship caught fire and sank en route to Brazil in March 2019. Porsche responded by restarting production of GT2 RS in May 2019, to which lead to the 77 example limited run of the 935; a unique model series based on the GT2 RS as tribute to the 935/78 "Moby Dick".
