The Need for Speed features hidden content as well as features to alter gameplay, which can be unlocked by entering a cheat code, winning the Tournament, or a combination of the two.

The Warrior PTO E/2 is a unique fictional high-speed bonus car. It does not appear in the 3DO release.
- MS-DOS: Complete a tournament and type "EAC POWR" as the player name.
- PlayStation: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS" as the tournament password, then hold L1 and R1 at the car selection menu.
- Sega Saturn: Complete two tournaments or input the cheat code "TSYBNS" as the tournament password.

Lost Vegas is a unique circuit course through a Las Vegas inspired city set at night. It does not appear in the 3DO release.

Lunar Springs[]
Lunar Springs is a rendition of Rusty Springs Raceway set on Luna.
- PlayStation: Complete two consecutive tournaments, or input the cheat code "SPKSHC" in tournament mode, then exit into a different game mode, and whilst Rusty Springs Raceway is highlighted in the course selection menu hold Triangle, L1, and R1.
Gameplay[]
Rally Mode[]
Rally mode replaces a course's road surface with a dirt road.
- MS-DOS: Complete a tournament and type "EAC RALY" as the player name.
- PlayStation: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS", then hold L1 and R1 at the course selection menu over the desired course.
- Sega Saturn: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS", then hold L and R at the course selection menu over the desired course.
- Special Edition: Complete two tournaments.
Mirrored Mode[]
Mirrored mode offers a flipped reflection rendition of courses.
- Special Edition: Complete a tournament.
No Mercy Mode[]
No Mercy mode disables traffic, cops, and any racing assistance between opponents.
- MS-DOS: Hold the "End" key whilst selecting Head-to-Head mode in the Options menu.
- PlayStation: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS" as the tournament password, then hold L1 and R1 whilst selecting Head-to-Head mode.
- Sega Saturn: Hold L and R whilst selecting Head-to-Head mode.
- Special Edition: Hold the "End" key whilst selecting Head-to-Head mode in the Control Central menu.
Cheat Codes[]
3DO[]
- Blow Up Traffic: Start a race against the computer, and during the loading screen hold L, R, and Left.
- At the starting line, quit the race and start again, but this time hold L, R, and Up during the loading screen.
- At the starting line, quit the race and start again, but this time hold L, R, and Right during the loading screen.
- At the starting line, quit the race and start again, but this time hold L, R, and Down during the loading screen.
- Start the race and press the X (handbrake) button to flip traffic cars in the air.
- Practise Mode: Highlight "Skill Level" in the Options menu, then press and hold X, R, L, A or X, R, A, L in very quick succession, with all four buttons being held down at the end.
- The "Skill Level" text will turn pink and any race can be played with no traffic or cops, although no records will be saved.
- Scooter Opponent: Play a race for at least 10 seconds, go into instant replay and rewind to the very beginning of the replay buffer.
- On a second controller, press R, Down, and B simultaneously.
- Quit the race and start it again to race against a Scooter.
- Black Ice on Alpine: Play a race for at least 10 seconds, go into instant replay and rewind.
- Press B on controller one, and on a second controller, press X, P, and C. A message stating "Car crashed.. Cars left: 4" will appear for a second.
- Exit the game and select a race on the Alpine course against the clock, and the third segment will be covered with black ice.
- View all Videos: Highlight "Opponent video On" in the Options menu, then press and hold X, R, L, and A in very quick succession, with all four being held down at the end.
- Videos with the X-Man will start, and all videos will follow.
- Performance Boost: Start a race and immediately press L, R, and Up on controller two, as well as pressing L, R, A, and C on controller three.
- A "Car Crashed" message will flash and exit the race
- Faster cars in any races played after will have a 20 percent increase in engine torque and power, and a 30 percent increase for the slower cars.
- Alternative Heads Up Display: Start a race and stay in cockpit camera.
- On a second controller, hold L, Up, and press A for three new views featuring an alternative Heads Up Display.
- Players can cycle through Tachometer, Tachometer/Mirror or nothing to be displayed.

- Accelerated arcade-racer play: Type "EAC WARP" as the player name.
PlayStation[]
- Arcade Mode: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS" as the tournament password, then hold L1 and R1 over the number of laps in course selection menu.
- Extra Weight: Complete a tournament or input the cheat code "TSYBNS" as the tournament password.
- To increase weight, navigate to the chassis diagram of the "Mechanical" Showcase for a car, and press L1 to add weight to the front or R1 to add weight to the rear end. The weight added is indicated by red triangles.
- Machine Gun: Select Head-To-Head mode and immediately after selecting the opponent's car; hold L1, Circle, Square, Up, and Left.
- When loading is complete, using the horn will make machine gun sounds and cause opponents to crash.
Trivia[]
- In Rally mode, Rusty Springs Raceway is altered into an Egyptian setting called Oasis Springs in the MS-DOS, PlayStation, and Special Edition releases.
- In the Sega Saturn release, Rusty Springs Raceway has a rally-themed counterpart similar to all other courses.
- In the MS-DOS release, completing two tournaments reveals the cheat codes "EAC POWR", "EAC RALY", and "EAC WARP" in the last slide of the game's credits.
- In the Japanese localisation Over Drivin' Skyline Memorial, the bonus course and rally mode are unlocked from the beginning.
