The 1983 Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX "Zenki" (AE86) is a 3-door hatchback produced by Toyota.

Introduced in 1983 as the fifth-generation (E80) Corolla, the Sprinter was offered as either a 2-door coupé or a 3-door liftback, with the Corolla GT-S going on sale for the North American market in 1984.

Fitted with a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre inline-four engine, the 4A-GE was build in collaboration with Yamaha developing the cylinder heads and Toyota manufacturing the engine in their Shimoyama plant in Aichi, Japan.

Three ascending performance trim levels were offered: GT, GT-V, and GT-APEX. The GT-APEX option includes two-tone paint, a rear window wiper, sport seats, and a 5-speed manual as standard or an optional 4-speed automatic.

The small frame, lightweight body, and rear-wheel drivetrain configuration made the E80 an popular choice for motorsport including rallying, touring cars, and drifting.

Need for Speed: Mobile[]

The Sprinter Trueno (AE86) appears in Need for Speed: Mobile and is included as part of a promotional collaboration with the Initial D street racing manga.

Its appearance is based on the Toyota AE86 driven by Takumi Fujiwara in the "White Ghost of Akina" arc of the manga, the Initial D: First Stage anime series, and the Initial D: New Theatrical Edition film trilogy.

Trivia[]

  • "Trueno" is the Spanish word for "thunder".
  • The AE86's nickname "Hachi-Roku (ハチロク)", Japanese for "eight-six", is derived from Toyota's internal development code: "A" for the A4 series engine, "E" for Corolla, "8" for the E80 generation, and "6" for the sixth variant within the generation.
  • In early Initial D volumes, Takumi Fujiwara has various modifications equipped to his AE86 including a set of RS Watanabe R-Type wheels, Cibie T353 fog lights, an ItalVolanti Admiral steering wheel, and an aftermarket cup holder.[2]
