X-Man, also known as the Opponent, is a character in the 3DO release of Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed.

The X-Man appears in the 3DO release of Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed, and is the only opponent that the player encounters, with his appearance in full motion video sequences to taunt the player.
He presents the two game modes in the main menu; Time Trial and Head To Head, with his critique of the results of each game mode either mocking the player for losing or begrudgingly acknowledging the player's victory.

- The X-Man is played by the late Brenan Baird.
- The X-Man is referred to as such in the game manual of The Need for Speed, but also as the Opponent in the credits.
- The X-Man was the first and last depicted racer character until the release of Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, which features the Factory Driver mode.
- The X-Man, alongside the Policeman, are the first portrayed characters in the Need for Speed series.
- The X-Man is completely absent from the 3DO Japanese localisation, titled Road & Track Presents: Over Drivin'.
